What’s The Best Way to Learn Photography?By
What’s the best way to learn photography? This is the question that everyone who falls in love with photography asks themselves. They want to learn how to take beautiful pictures, but they don’t know where to start.
A decade-and-a-half ago, I was in the same boat. I had purchased an SLR camera (this is before digital) and wanted to learn how to take beautiful pictures. I spent hours online trying to learn photography by reading photography websites. I checked out books in the library. I purchased books. I purchased video courses on photography. I went to photography conventions.
After all this, I felt confused. I had learned a lot, but I still had a lot of knowledge-gaps in the fundamentals of photography. Most of what I had learned was photography tips and tricks. The basics of photography were being drowned by the advanced techniques.
After many months I figured it out, but that was certainly not the best way to learn photography. Now that I’ve been a full-time professional photographer for over a decade, it’s time for me to help out the ‘new-bees’ by saving them loads of time and frustration.
How to Learn Photography
Learn basic photography by following these steps:
- Buy a decent camera. You need a camera that allows you the flexibility to control it manually. If you really want to learn photography and take exceptional pictures, you need to buy a good camera. I recommend purchasing a DSLR camera or a mid-size camera. You can read the article “What Camera Should I Buy?” to help you make a smart purchase.
- Learn the basics of photography. Many people buy a nice DSLR camera and think that their pictures are automatically going to improve. I hear them trying to justify their purchase by saying, “Wow! This camera takes nice pictures”. But the reality is that their photography is not improving. They are just taking snapshots with an expensive point-and-shoot because they are setting their camera on Auto and firing away. In some cases their photography gets worse because they try to control some of the camera settings without understanding the basics of photography. To take advantage of your great new camera you first need to learn and understand the basics of photography. That way you can control your camera manually to get amazing results. By reading my ebook “Photography Fundamentals – Learn Basic Photography to Unleash Your Creativity” you will learn everything you need to know to start on your journey to become a great photographer.
- Practice, practice, practice. After you learn the basics of photography, you need to pick up your camera and take lots of pictures. Practice everything you have learned by going out and taking photos. Experiment with different settings, try capturing your subject from different angles, take pictures of the same thing with a variety of focal lengths, all while taking note of how this changes the final outcome. This seems like a logical thing to do, but I’m surprised how many people don’t take their camera out to experiment. They only take it out during special occasions and then they wonder why their pictures are not that good. You can’t learn by only reading and viewing web pages. You have to take your camera out and ‘play around’ with all the different settings based on the fundamentals of photography you have learned.
